A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Victorian Costume Trip

Date & time: 26/04/2014 at 10:00

Details: The ever popular Victorian costume trip makes its annual appearance. Due to popular demand we’re returning to Cwmorthin this year. However, this year there’s an optional extra – arrival by steam train!

We’re catching the Welsh Highland steam train from Minffordd at 10.20am which will deliver us to Tanygrisiau at 11.25. For the full train timetable if anyone wants to join us it’s on:
http://www.festrail.co.uk/timetable-fr.htm

Final return train at 17:20 from Tanygrisiau arriving Minffordd at 18:20.

What you need:
• An oil/paraffin lamp (available cheaply from e-bay!)
• A Victorian costume (see Cwmorthin user album for costume ideas)
• Possibly a back up light (i.e. a candle!)

If you’re not arriving by steam train, we’ll meet at 11.25am on the Tanygrisiau station platform and walk up to the mine from there (about an hour's walk up a steep hill).

Lunch will be provided, however if you would like to bring along any additions they’d be very welcome (port, welshcakes …)

Please PM Rockchick and let me know if you’re vegetarian or have any other dietary requirements.

This is a relatively short and easy trip, so please feel free to bring along people we don’t normally see!

Please note: this is a Victorian costume trip, LED lights did not exist, so we won’t be using ‘em!

Hi all,
We seem to have a problem with this trip, so I need a consensus about what people want to do about it. It looks very unlikely that we’ll have enough time to walk to the mine from the station (I suspect that will take about an hour), round the mine, eat and return to the station in time for the train (we’ve got max 3hrs 20 mins!)

So, we have a few options:

1) We can give up with getting the train at all
2) we can assume we won’t catch the return train and have some cars at the mine
3) we can not have food
4) we can postpone the trip by a couple of weeks as the summer timetable runs later in the day.

Please can you let me know what you want to do, and we’ll go with the majority decision.

Please note- while helpful comments from all are appreciated- I’m only going to take into account for this people who are signed up for the trip!

My thoughts..

1) I like the idea of going on the train

2) We need to have the obligatory food in the caban

3) Personally, postponing the trip by a couple of weeks is good for me, only because it gives me a little extra time to strengthen the old broken bones

I agree:
Train
Food
2 weeks delay

Further options:
Go on an earlier train (if the timetable suits)

Hi All

Got the new 2014 FR TT in front of me...

Minffordd departure is 10:20, NOT 10:25.

The summer TT is running on Saturdays (+ other days) 19th & 26th April - the return trains from TyG would then dep at 17:20, arr back at Minffordd 18:10.

I'll go with 19th or 26th April.

I can have a word with FR hierarchy to see if either some empty slate waggons and/or quarrymans carr #8 and Van 2 could be added to the rear of the train for added authenticity for us to travel in.

Cheers

Clive

Hi all,
Well it seems to be pretty much unanimous to push the date back! Apologies to anyone this is going to cause problems for.

I suggest we make it the 26th April in that case, and thank you Clive for the help! So, 10.20 at Minffordd it is then!

Great stuff

I've edited this thread title and the original post to bring it in line with the modified event details; and tweaked the event slightly so it starts at 10am - so folk don't turn up at the station after the train has left 😉

Should be a fun trip

Just to pick peoples brains, what kind of backpacks did victorians have? I'm guessing cheap canvas or something?

Handkerchief knotted together and hung on a walking stick over your shoulder?

Your average Victorian mine worker had no need of a backpack as he probably owned nothing to carry in it?

I have a canvas satchel type which looks quite authentic....apart from the zippers!

What authentic Victorian hairstyle will you be sporting on the day? 😉

Canvas or soft leather satchel (over the shoulder) type things, don't recall seeing Victorian backpacks.

Hi folks,
We're still discussing this, but we *may* be asked to do a quick photo opportunity for the railway with some slate wagons on the day - nothing is confirmed yet, but we're hoping we may get a Victorian carriage added to the train just for us in return. It might mean a slightly earlier start, and joining the train at the first station.

I'm only mentioning this now because you may want to consider your costumes 😉 I know what show-offs you all are!

anyhow- this is not confirmed and if anyone doesn't want to be included that's fine. As soon as I know for definite what is happening I shall let you all know.

That'd be a good laugh! I'm up for that as long as my costume is up to scratch

Is that sort of satchel okay?
