Organised by The Welsh Mines Preservation Trust with Sponsorship from Royal Commission for Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales “Metal Links” Project.
Celebrating the 400th Anniversary of Sir Hugh Myddelton’s completion of the New River and visiting some of the mines he worked in Ceredigion. Your opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Sir Hugh.
SATURDAY 25th MAY
Meet 1000am at Cwmsymlog Mine
Guided walk around Cwmsymlog Mine – Nigel Chapman
Short service at the site of Sir Hugh Myddelton’s Chapel at Cwmsymlog around 12 noon.
Packed lunch at Cwmsymlog
Afternoon Guided walk around Darren Mine – Simon Timberlake
SATURDAY EVENING
7pm at Llanbadarn Village Hall.
Evening of talks about Mining in Mid Wales from the Cistercians
to the time of Sir Hugh Myddelton.
The Period between the Cistercians and Myddelton – David Sables, Lampeter University
The life of Sir Hugh Myddelton – Graham Levins, Welsh Mines Preservation Trust
Some thoughts on the whereabouts of Myddelton’s mining at Darren and Bronfloyd – Simon Timberlake, WMPT and Early Mines Research Group
SUNDAY 26th MAY
Meet 1000 at Cwmsymlog Mine
Guided walk around Bronfloyd Mine – Simon Timberlake
Return to Cwmsymlog for packed lunch
Afternoon visit to Cwmerfyn Mine – Robert Ireland, and Goginan Mine – Graham Levins.
Please bring suitable clothing for the weather conditions, suitable footwear for walking over rough ground and a packed lunch. Most of the walking will be on paths or grass.
Cars can be left at Cwmsymlog, Minibus transport provided from Cwmsymlog both days, we will return Cwmsymlog each lunchtime for visitors to eat their packed lunch and use the toilet facility which will be provided.
