Anybody up for a couple of days in Nent between Christmas and the new year?

Probably not something a few of you will want to think about today but perhaps the big Nent Traverse one day?

Hi Simon - I'll reply for the "Usual Suspects"
It is highly likely that escaping the festivities will loom in the minds of the Northern Aditnow contingent and we would love to have you up here. I'll have the "Apprentice" (check out the photo of the month) show you around the more interesting bits of Smallcleugh. Following someone who's well under four foot tall and is capable of walking through passages while one is crawling on ones knees is quite amusing at first - but this does not last long.
The others (RJV, CT etc) will probably "chirp up" about the middle of the week - as they have just done the Nent Traverse with CAT today. I expect they will spend the next day or two complainging about aches and pains - that's if they actually manage to get out of bed tomorrow.

Cheek. I'll have you know i'm underground again tonight !

Not sure how i'll be set over Christmas yet, my company kindly decided to leave me as the only person in the UK from three, where we tended to do one day each.
Not sure if i'll get shafted for all three now.

Having just done the Nenthead Traverse yesterday i'm not in a hurry to do it again. Generally you're just slogging around the horse levels for 8hrs without seeing much in the way of workings or artifacts.

There are plenty of much more entertaining places if you're looking for a couple of days in Nent.

Oh come on!, it wasn't that bad! In fact I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it.

Its just that it doesnt allow any time to really have a good poke around and explore all the rises and workings your dashing past.

If you're looking for a round-trip a jaunt around the darkest reaches of Brownley Hill would be a strong contender as an alternative. Will get you to places not much visited by occasional visitors (& even regular visitors). A few SRT pitches, some impressive stopes and quite complex workings to be seen en route.
A major plus is that nobody is going to have to go back and de-rig it the next day.

I can quite understand why the Great Nent Traverse might not be high on a few people's wish list for the next few months

Maybe one for next summer?

For the Christmas break if there are enough people around / not working then a couple of days good exploring sounds excellent. I am more than happy to be a tourist on this and follow you guys advice

Well if you're determined to do the traverse why not do it properly instead of the normal stomp around the horse levels?

There was a discussion on here a while back about how to do the longest trip by doing such things as going by the Longcleugh/Barron's Sump area and around the back end of Brownley. Too much for a mere mortal to do in one day I fear but you could have an overnight camp somewhere like Proud's or the Wellgill Flats.

It would in reality be a fairly frivolous and pointless activity but at least nobody else is likely to have done it first!

Sounds like a great idea to me, providing it doesn't snow like it did last year!

It would seem there are two possible types of trip:
1. Great Nenthead Traverse. A 'box ticking' exercise so you can say you've done it, but not seeing much of interest (apart from neck deep water)
2. Artefact viewing trip

I enjoyed 1. because it allowed me to stitch together some of the 2. that I've done previously.

Maybe both are required?

If it snows like it did last year you might find yourself still there in May!

if we're up there for a few days doing both a 'mega' trip and more interesting artifact trips sounds good, though you'd have to decide which way round was best- artifacts first so you know what you're linking up later, or the long trip while we all still have energy and enthusiasim!!

I could be tempted by a few days at Nent over christmas - weather depending of course

Would be more intereseted in exploring trips than the traverse altho it is a good through trip and well worthy 🙂

I'm not totally set on the idea of the traverse - I'd like to do it again but could be any time next year.

I'm up for the idea of a very long day full on SRT / deep water trip and then photo / artifact trip the second day. Sounds a good'un

Mike, Dave - I'll look into accommodation a little closer to the time and once we're definitely sure it's going ahead 🙂

Right, assuming its going to be a two day trip how about this for a draft schedule?

Day One.
Brownley Hill.
Round trip for those who want to dangle off ropes and so on.
For those who don't a look around the Wellgill Flats, workings on BH vein and the engine room if an electron ladder is taken for the short climb up.

Day Two
Rampgill.
Plenty of rises for the acrobatically inclined to clamber about in.
Plenty pretty things for any photographers.
Plenty of genuine IA type interest for everyone else.

As for accommodation, Cherry Tree Cottage in Nent is handy for the mines - £25 per person per night or perhaps a pub/B&B in Allendale Town where there's the choice of a couple more pubs and shops to stagger between on a night.

There's also the bunk house on site which will likely have no other visitors at that time of year but is a bit spartan.

That sounds like a good plan :)

There is a good camp site up at nent hall or you can camp on the rec ground opposite the miners as long as you use them for drink and food :)

Or you could be a big girl and use the bunk house

this was us in March lol UserPostedImage

That sounds like a good plan. I have been meaning to spend some time in Rampgill for a while 🙂
