A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Moel Fferna SRT Trip

Date & time: 28/12/2008 at 11:00

Details: Work off the Christmas Turkey with a trip to Moel Fferna!

Moel Fferna is situated to the west of Llangollen and was worked on seven levels. It is notable for the relatively flat vein and the long chambers which span many levels.

The mine also shows some influence of coal mining techniques, with the presence of a 'cog' roof support, believed unique in the slate industry.

Note: SRT is required for this trip as it involves a descent into a shaft and an ascent out. This is around 40' and is not technically challenging, although the start of the ascent is a little tricky. Equipment required is: a harness, ascenders and a descender.

Ah well, will just have to watch the Great Escape, maybe McQueen will make it over the fence this time ๐Ÿ˜‰

Don't give in that easy Rob! I did my first SRT trip into Moel Fferna at the weekend with a borrowed harness, it was really easy. I'm sure someone could lend you a spare harness or share one on the trip. I've just put a load of bids on Ebay for kit. Dont miss out on this one, I thought it was a really interesting mine ๐Ÿ˜‰

In the past we have used a mixture with Abseil in and self lifeline on a ladder that works well and allows less technical bodies to have a go.

Why not do it that way

I'm afraid I have to disagree with Mike on this. (Assuming of course that what I call self-lifelining is the same thing as Mike has in mind - i.e. the climber with a single jammer on a stationary rope hanging by the ladder)

Personally, I'm not keen on self-lifelining on ladders for inexperienced persons, particularly on free-hanging pitches. In my experience the usual problem with novices on caving ladders is that the climber does not get their feet vertically under them, puts too much weight on their arms, loses their rhythm and ends up struggling up the ladder a rung at a time, with both hands on the same rung.

if the person is being lifelined, the lifeliner is (or should be) in a position to provide active assistance to the climber. This is even more helpful if the lifeline is attached to the climber in the small of the back, so as to pull them into the ladder. If necessary, additional pull can be improvised at the top of the pitch with a jammer and pulley or crab to give a mechanical advantage when hauling. (I had to do this earlier this year to bring a tired 16st man up a 30' pitch in the Dales - people who know me will be aware I'm a 10st weakling.)

If the climber is self lifelining and they get into difficulties, they are in the same situation as if they had encountered a problem with SRT (with the possibly complicating factor that they may be in an improvised harness or have the jammer attached to a load-bearing waist belt). This means that someone needs to get down to them and then attach a hauling line to them so they can be hauled up the pitch from the top, or else attach to them directly and prussik up with them in tow. Either option will take time to set up, exposes the rescuer to some danger and can transform minor difficulty on a ladder into a major problem.

Yes you are right I was not thinking it through - it is easy enough to lifeline and would seem a shame to deprive so many the chance 0of a good trip

Just a gentle bump for this trip - and a note that if anyone wishes to brush up on their SRT, there will be a chance towards the end of November - see the thread at this http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewtopic.aspx?t=2009

Hey Vanoord -
One session may not be enough to gain the sufficient competance on SRT

why not compromise and ladder it too?

Indeed! :)

Whilst the aim is to have people who are happy with their own SRT skills, it is intended that we will have a ladder 'just in case'.

I'd imagine that the pub will be it, then decamp into vehicles that can get us to the legal limit for vehicles, which isn't too far away from the mine.

I think I've got a Freelander up that far, so a RAV should cope. Failing that, I reckon Davel can drag you out ๐Ÿ˜‰

dont think your rav4 would make it to the top mate last time you were with us you were in a v8 landy wernt you... bless you can always try if you want im sure someone will tow you up  only joking matty i have to envy your 4x4 as i dont have one you could always get Jagman to drive it, he'll get it up there and in the mine then out again

Banner - no longer calling it an exclusively SRT trip if a ladder is available?

Cheers

Ahhhhhh....! :)

It's an SRT trip with a ladder present in case of difficulties, but it would be preferable if it weren't needed!

Basically, it's possible to get out of Moel Fferna with a minimal amount of SRT experience, but the bottom of a 30' hole is not the best place to learn from scratch!

getting up there should be fine in any car but its a good idea to limit the number of cars anyway.
rigging a deviation (sling and crab) off the tree makes life a lot easier as instead of bashing into the sides it becomes a free hang ๐Ÿ™‚.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
