Does anybody know exactly where Rampgill meets Coalcleugh mine? On the advice of some one who told someone that there were nice carvings in coalcleugh we went in search of it, and possibly found it, but im not enirely sure.We went to Rampgill shaft then carried on past it for a bit, and came to a gate, im assuming that is the boundary gate, but it wasnt very far in and the map we had showed a very sharp left hand turn before the boundary. We kept going until we ran out of time and had to head back, where we got to there was a slight collapse (crawlable through) in front and to the left some ladders leading up to another level, any idea where we were?

At this current time there is definately no connection open from Rampgill to Coalcleugh

The Beaumont royalty starts at the county boundary which is approximately where the gate is. After that is Coalcleugh.

As an aside, there is a picture in The Life and Work of a Northern Leadminer from when they reopened Coalcleugh in the 1950's which shows a loco with a miner at that next junction.

The two mines were connected from very early on and the Lead company used to pay a royalty to the Coalcleugh mine to be able to take their deads out to West Allendale cos Coalcleugh had rails and a waggonway long before Rampgill had similar luxuries.

Another interesting note is that there has been lots of work done on the North String from Rampgill which crosses the county boundary and is not recorded on the plans.

Coalcleugh was reputedly sealed by Lord Allendale (well no thimself) because of reports of bad air.
Many attempts have been made in recent years to find the way through from one to the other, I am reliably informed that the main reason for failure is that everybody looks in the wrong place, sadly I don't know where the right place is ::)

hmm, well now im just confused. I think we might just give up pursuit of that trip then if nobody can decide where it actually is  So far thats the only bit of Rampgill we've ventured to, any other parts well worth a visit?

Scale burn is worth a visit, there's a horse gin still in its chamber along there, though I've not looked at the access down through the dig since that note went up about it being dangerous, maybe it has finally collapsed, its been threatening to for quite a while.

The brewery shaft is brilliant if you can get yourself onto one of the winch trips that's organised from time to time. (srt is not allowed any more since they put all those lights in there.)

Horse Gin still accesable as far as I know. The little shaft down to it has squeezed a fair bit and it is a little iffy but its been like that for over a year.
If you want to SRT Brewery shaft then you just go in through Rampgill, plenty of people still do it, I would recomend a winch trip though, far more fun and much easier

If you want to go on past the horse gin better think thin too .... that second barrel has squeezed a bit in the last year or two.

Or maybe its my expanding waistline

Yea, my boyfriend managed to get a place on a brewery shaft trip when someone canceled. Sounded like a fantastic trip. We took someone down Rampgill a few days ago that had never seem brewery shaft, they got rather confused when someone set the virtual stone off! Its not as impressive from three lights down as we thought it might be 🙂 So roughly how do you get to scale burn? I have a map but not with me, and its slightly wet and muddy 😉

AHaa ! I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I simply could not get through, but curiously I managed it the last time I tried, a few years ago. The access shaft has narrowed a lot but seems to have stabilized since I checked it out in February. A Wire ladder or SRT "MUST" be used if the shaft is not to deteriorate further.

I got through alright it was getting back was the problem.
The rivets holding the metal have rotted out and the whole thing has pinched in a bit- with ragged edges on the bottom to snag you.
It took a liberal application of nice slimey mud to get back out again

Yeah nice pic.
Met a guy who worked in there, he reckoned it was a bad un, always falling down and his mates once had to dig him out after it ran on him.
Apparently they also did some prospecting from one of the shafts beside the Nenthead to Coalcleugh road about the same time.

I have just noticed this posting. Sorry Sparty_lea, I rather think that it is your waistline. That barrel was a ****** when we put it in.
By the way, thank you for uploading the Rotherhope Fell plans.
