Anyone know anything about a couple of mines on Dufton Fell & Knock Fell. I was walking on Meldon Fell in July and wondered what was on the next fell and came across them whilst looking at old maps of the area..
They are:-
Stakebeck Mine (Lead) at 694m asl (2277ft) which show up quite nicely on satellite images as a series of shafts on the 3 Yard Limestone, and there was a shop and a level shown on the old maps. GR: NY 7463 2958
Knock Coal Shop Mine (Coal) at 728m asl (2391ft) which shows up as a small area of grey spoil on the satellite image, but which comprised two levels & a shop. GR: NY 7389 2998
Knock Coal Mine (Coal) at 703m asl (2308ft) which shows up as an area of black spoil and the ruins of a building approx 100m apart on the satellite. GR: NY 7338 3073
Access is difficult as it is mostly blanket bog or swamp with the odd bit of limestone or gritstone protruding from the ground. There is access as far as Great Rundale Tarn at NY 7286 2837 or up Stake Beck which branches off Maize Beck above High Cup Nick.
