I’m looking for as much info as possible on the above mine. Plans, old photographs (especially underground) and anything else of interest.

I’m also trying to find a copy of the NMRS British Mining no.33, if anyone has a copy they’d like to sell or knows where I can buy one?

I lived in the village of Cononley as a kid and have photographs of the incline shaft, as we used to venture down regularly as naive kids. Would love to see photos from other parts of the mine if anyone has any?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to all for you input. Unfortunately, the NMRS has only PDF download available. I want a hard copy but it’s proving difficult to find one!

Would be good to hear from anyone having a collection of photographs from this mine though.

Perhaps you could try Mike Gill directly at NMRS, he may have spare copies lurking, but I'm less clear how a printed pdf (that you can scribble on it to your heart's content) is less useful than the real thing, even if that looks prettier.

Quite possibly Kilhope may have a copy to examine as I gave a lot of NMRS/NCMRS stuff to them in 2015/6 although I don't know offhand if BM 33 was among them but it was quite a comprehensive pile. Abe Books is another possible (expensive) source.

Jim

PS Mr Fellows, if, like me, you have installed an ad blocker Mr Moore's stuff doesn't appear. Bloody technology bah humbug!! :flowers:

PDMHS have got AFAIK a complete collection of NMRS publications but we won't be selling unless there's a spare copy.

I'm going to purchase the PDF but not sure whether the images are low res as most publications by PDF seem to lower resolution of images for delivery. It's the images I'm interested in mostly.

Thanks again for your input though.

Message for Mike at Moorebooks... are you still posting orders at the moment? You have a few books that I would be interested in.

Yes I am posting books out during the lockdown, I avoid the busy Post Office in my town and use Royalmail.com click and drop service simply use a handy post box. For larger parcels over 2 kilo I use Parcel2go.com and I a small corner shop to take the parcel into

Thanks Mike, I’ll have a look to see what I fancy.

Didn't Martin Roe have a website at one point with underground photos of Cononley? I had search but couldn't find it.

I've certainly seen photos of the workings on another website in the past but I can't recall exactly where...

Yes, I seem to remember a website by Martin Roe but alas, it's
not live anymore.

For those of you interested, I've just uploaded a few of my own images from the early 1980's. Some Inclined Plane and Upper Adit underground shots of Cononley Lead Mine.

They were on a freeserve address, so defunct now. A Yorkshire Archaeological Society newsletter refers to the same material being previously available on a CD.

Searching on academic sources it appears thus:

Roe, M 2000a An Integrated Study of the Underground and Surface Archaeology of Cononley Lead Mine, North Yorkshire. Unpub BSc dissertation in Archaeology, University of Leicester.

There's also a geophysical survey by R.W. Vernon here:

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
