I've added a new feature when uploading photos.

This only applies to people who upload photos not taken themself - e.g. out of copyright photos or photo licensed for re-use under the creative commons license etc.

You can ignore this if you only upload your own photos!

When uploading photos you'll now be asked to select if it's your own photo or not your own.

If it's not your own then you will have to complete another box indicating the reason it can be used - reproduction number, CC attribution etc.

If you only ever upload your own photos just select "This IS my own photo and ignore the second box!

Why?

Quite a few people upload copyright free photos, which is great, it goes to help build up a library of archive material.

However I quite often get complaints that the re-use information isn't displayed. So now it will be

Also. If it's not your own photo you'll see that the supersize versions are no longer stamped (c) username which is fair enough since they're not!

Batch uploads

This modification doesn't apply to the batch upload since that's intended as a quick and easy way of uploading 20 photos at a time. If you're batch uploading copyright free photos you'll need to go back to the album and add the necessary copyright info.

I am sorry to say I regard this as a retrograde step, especially regarding archive material. The new boxes are almost impossible to fill out simply because the answer is not known.
Another point is some people have spent quite large sums of money ( not me ) over the years building up their collections, this new rule now means that any Tom Dick or Harry can download an entire collection for free!
This is bound to stop, if not retard any more archive photos being uploaded to the site and I feel this new rule has been brought in to satisfy the whims of a very small minority. 😞

I disagree.

This modification has been made to stop the tide of complaints I receive about photos having (c) username slapped across them when they're not (c) username because they're out of copyright or are copyright to somebody else but are available for re-use.

It's not the uploader's fault it was putting (c) username across them - it was a limitation of the site. But it made it look like the person who uploaded it was somehow claiming copyright. And that's what I receive a steady stream of complaints about.

On the point of completing the box. If permission has been granted by Joe Bloggs type Permission granted by Joe Bloggs. If it's a copyright free image due to the age type that. If it's licensed under the CC licence there might be a CC attribute required. If it's from various online libraries that allow re-use then there is likely to be a reproduction number.

This is a valid point. So I've tweaked the code to show (c) Copyright image across supersize photos where copyright is not with the uploaded. Normal images still (and always will) say (c) Username

Simon I've just added three photos to the Hobet user album. Just checking that what I've added is what you require. Just to add I'm exceedingly glad you have removed the personal © on the image.

Can this be done retrospectively?

Those who have legitimately uploaded photos that were not theirs should not be held accountable for older uploads with the wrong info, and it may be that if it can be done retrospectively, there will be some images that get overlooked.

Looks spot on to me - and hopefully didn't take more than a few seconds extra when you were uploading.

Absolutely, you just need to find the photo(s) you want to amend (locate the album in other words) and click the 'edit' button. You can then add to or change any of the information against the photo.

I just went to check this myself - I should have done so before asking the question! All pretty simple really. Thanks.

Seems I need to amend the "few" photos I have aquired on the net 😞

P.s Simon you can't spell! What exactly is a COPRIGHT ??

Ignore this if this IS your own photograph!
If this is not your own photograph please complete this box with the details confirming it is free of copright or licensed for re-use

This modification for setting copyright status on photos and adding re-use statement for open source / copyright expired images has been live for a couple of months now.

From my prespective it's nice to know the tools are in place to stop the occassional barrage of "how dare you claim copyright on this image" type messages I receive.

I haven't noticed a discernable slow-down in uploads of old / archive photos. All that needs doing is setting a single drop-down and adding a re-use statement.

However would apprecaite any feedback from people who've used it - does it cover all requirements? Good, bad, indifferent? Easy to use?

I've used it a fair bit as you no doubt realise Simon 🙂 and have no problem with it and it's easy to use.
