At last the previously discussed new site feature is finished; Major Surface Features.

This was discussed some time back and work to implement it has formed three parts:

1) The above ground / below ground option when uploading photos

2) The ability to classify locations as other than a Mine or Quarry (the eventual list including Collieries, Railways, Tramways, Ports etc)

3) This (just finished) feature to link a Major Surface Feature to all the mines / quarries / collieries (and anything else) it served.

Basically works as follows:

1) Some classifcation types (Tramway / Railway / Mill / Smelt Mill / Port / Factory) can optionally be classified as a Major Surface Feature.

2) After you have added a location (or updated a location) in one of these classifications the standard 'Thank you' screen will be interrupted with a new screen asking if this facility served more than one location.

3) If it did not, simply click the appropriate link, and job done, you'll be transferred to the usual 'Thank you' screen to indicate the add/update is complete.

4) If it did serve more than one location then click the alternative link and you'll be taken to a new page offering all the other mines / quarries / etc within an area (which you can range from 1km to 10km). Select each mine / quarry / location your facility served and click 'update'.

5) Each mine served by this new Major Surface Feature will then contain a link to the Major Surface Feature, and in turn if a location is a Major Surface Feature it will present a link to each location it served.

As an example I've added the Ffestiniog Railway, and linked some of the Blaenau slate mines it served.

So looking at the Ffestiniog Railway's home page
http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Ffestiniog-Railway/
http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Ffestiniog-Railway/  look in the right hand column below the Mines nearby block and you'll see all the mines / quarries served by the Ffestiniog Railway (well, all the ones I've linked so far).

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Cwmorthin-Slate-Mine/  http://www.aditnow.co.uk/mines/Cwmorthin-Slate-Mine/  and again in the right hand column below the Mines nearby block you'll see that it says which Major Surface Feature it was served by.

The wording in both cases is subtly different, to indicate whether this is a MSF that served other locations or was served by a MSF.

Basically it's just another way of linking locations together to hopefully make the site more useful.

ASAP I'll be adding a dedicated page to list out all the locations listed as Major Surface Features.

Enjoy. I hope!

Just the one entry for now, it'll make sense as more Major Surface Features get entered into the database.

Is this to include museums such as Inigo Jones slate works and the Peak District mining museum etc etc etc?

In the case of Inigo Jones, wouldn't that appear as a slate works associated with Aberllefenni?

Can easily include museums in the list of location types (mine, quarry, railway etc) if people think it's justified. Although if a museum was a mine once I guess it'd be best to catalogue it as it was rather than as it is?

Some are and some aren't. Blists hill for example has 1 mine on site, but the furnaces, railway and a whole lot of other things served several mines in the immediate area.
Plus, museums would appear on google searches!!!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
