...GrahamI's excellent panoramic archive photos promopted me to think about viewing photos really big. When resized to the same width as a normal aspect photo these come out quite small.

Here's a hack to allow anybody to view photos really big and enjoy these (and other) photos at a more meaningful size.

Take a picture like this http://www.aditnow.co.uk/supersize/Cilgwyn-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-004/

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage/Cilgwyn-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-004?w=1280  into the address hit enter or click go and you'll see something like this: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage/Cilgwyn-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-004?w=1280

http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage/Cilgwyn-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-004?w=2400  displays like this: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage/Cilgwyn-Slate-Mine-Archive-Album-Image-004?w=2400

You can keep up-sizing until the photo looks distorted, at which point it's displaying bigger than it was orignally uploaded.

Note, the watermark (which is added for the photographer's peace of mind that their work cannot be copied and passed off by somebody else) is added when the image is created on the fly, so it will increase in size as you increase the photo size.

99% of the time you don't need to do this, the normal Supersize is big enough, but for the occassion where a photo comes along where you really want to see the details or where the aspect ratio is different (like these panoramas) it's a usefull workaround.

And it works better if you disable the 'fit to width' function on opera and firefox.

Good point Clunk

And in IE if a picture is too wide to fit on the screen it'll auto resize down, but you can click on it to enlarge, then click again to toggle back to the reduced size.

But why are you still using Opera? It's an abomination :curse:

Export them that man :)

Or is the bookmark bit in Opera really good?

To be honest I've not used it in ages, when it first came out it consistently rendered things very closely to IE5, but then became inconsistent (I found) with both IE6 and the emerging Mozilla browsers.

I find opera very good.
I switched to firefox because everyone told me to.
Although with opera there are a few websites it is incompatible with or bizarre things happen. For example, on aditnow, all the forums are anchored to the bottom. So you always end up with loads of space before the first post.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
