Hope this is of some interest,and not too off topic.I built this a few years ago as an exersize in basic metalworking.Its a little `overbuilt` ,but very usable (the sheeve wheels are rated at 250kg capacity each).I picked up a small electric winch to power it ,but never set it up properly.

Cheers James!Thinking of making a Dorothea type one.The things you do to get you out in the shed!Ideal if you have a terraced garden or are excavating a massive fish pond!I have always admired relatively simple solutions to complex problems,and I think the subject of `moving mountains`displays many such solutions.Its amazing what can be done with a few pulleys,wire rope and levers.
Incidentally,there is an interesting photo in the book `Delving in Dinorwic`by D.C Carrington,of a couple of quarrymen hanging on to one of the hoist trolley-maybe on their way to fix the stop block?quite a good book for the quarry hunslet fans,and includes an interesting hand drawn map of the galleries with the appropriate names.

I know I am going to sound like another well known contributor to this site, but could you put something in the photo to give some idea of it's size? Or maybe say what the principle dimensions are?

It looks a good model whatever size it is!

I should have put something there as you said,to give a sense of scale.If it is of interest I could re assemble it by a ruler (its been`off the wire`for a while now,but doesn`t take long to hang it up.Anyway,to give an idea of scale in the meantime,the sheeve wheels are 4inches in diameter each.The main `frames` are 6mm thick mild steel,the `axles` are 16mm diameter mild steel bar (drilled centrally 6mm for the fixings to lock the plates togethe`).The main frames are drilled 16mm to hold the weight of the things,whilst the outer fixings hold the assemblys together.As I said its a little overbuilt compared to the full size things (the main plates only act as a spacer for the strapping which takes all the weight-the four sided plates only hold the strapping to the required gradient)but I wanted it to look proportionally the same,and also to be capable of work safely if required.The pulleys (unfortunately solid not spoked) were from a lifting gear place.

It is a fair size then. The measurements you have given give the idea of size. The present view gives the perspective well. I like the idea that it is useable as well as being a model of quarry equipment.

I see from your personal album you are quite an artist too.

sorry it took a while,hope it gives an idea of size etc.
While on the subject of cableways,does anyone have any info on how large steel cable would be strung across/into a pit,or how they would be tensioned.Im guessing steel rope would be awkward to handle on ropeway and incline installations.Carrington suggested in `delving in Dinorwig`that cables might be hauled up incline drums to get them on site,wich I would assume would still be a mamoth task.
I believe the Vivian ropeway is `re-erected`.Maybe someone out there has any ideas as to how the set up was rigged over a flooded sinc.Incidentally,the slate must have been good there to dig so far below lake level..

Excellent model all the more so because you have made it functional too! If you do ever set it up, it would be nice to see photos (or even better a video) of it in operation.

Maybe in the summer (when I can see outside) might have a go at setting it up.i suppose it would be a shame to have built it and do nothing more with it.It would be interesting to see how these things operate,just because there are no working examples (?).Building it raised many questions,such as the ones in a previous post,(about rigging)so all in all it was quite an intresting `model`to build.

Just worked out how the `brake`works on these things!Maybe should stick to pondering the Rubicks cube.But wheres the fun in that!Hope its of some interest.

It woud be great if you could set it up at a slate quarry location with some fine slate for scale. Film it with a video camera and put it on youtube.

Looks like spitfires article shows Hendersons earliest cableways,with a very simple trolley.The Henderson catalogue I have shows something very similar in a granite quarry in Aberdeen.
Hymacs idea of putting the mini cableway in a suitable setting was something I was considering-It wouldnt quite seem `right`filming it in the back garden against fence panels and trees.we`ll see what happens....
