After a years storage I dug my Holman 303H airleg machine out of the back of the shed. Coupling it up to an air hose and opened the valve; nothing - it had siezed. Probably some moisture in it when I put it away.
So far I have lubricated it,, reconnected it to the air opened the valve and tapped it with a hide mallet with no result.
Next step is probably to douse it in diesel.
Does anyone have any ideas how to free it up without stripping it?

Immerse in diesel is always good, but most likely ,you will need to undo the long bolts to split the machine, they tend to stick in there, done one years back, that had been idle for nearly 20yrs.

Try using Morris,s MD4,it is much better than WD40 and I have used it on trucks and old exavators with exellent results.

I got one working last year by opening the valve flat out and hitting the foot in line with the leg with a large hammer so it went outwards (I drilled a hole in a boulder and lifted the leg off the floor)

If I remember I'll ask the fitters at the mine and see what they have to say about it. My money is on a partial dismantle. 😮
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

I bit the bullet and had it to bits - what an incredibly well designed and elegant piece of engineering - stripped and back together in just over an hour -why can't everything be made this well.

Have you got it working ?
Taking it apart was something I was taught at CSM once along time ago. You might find that having taken it apart and given it a good soak all will be sweetness and light.
Also I know some one who will have some spares if required ! Knowing him there will be a charge :o
All the best

I have some more (if needed ) advice, the rock drill oil that is used when the machines are operated if left turns all the surfaces inside the drill to a kind of varnish as well as assisting in seizure. A good soaking in diesel is recommended to remove all the dried out rock drill oil. A good blast with some air to clean out all the chambers and once put back together should sing like Holmans intended 😉

On examination the piston had siezed in the bore and the ratchet assembly was also sticking. Fortunately neither problem was terminal, both being easily sorted.
As I had a compessor on hire I fired the machine up this morning and it appears to be working.
That said I am not 100% certain that I have set the valve assembly up correctly - running the machine dry I am getting a considerable amount of air coming out of the water inlet; is this normal?

You are quite right it is not normal for air to come out of the water inlet. Have you checked that the water needle is located correctly.
I'll have a look later for the 303 manual that I have, or there may be one on this site already.
