Does anybody have any experience of using this sort of thing?

(not the actual model, just the concept of an external monitor)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VM-2-External-7-On-camera-LCD-monitor-HDMI-DSLR-VIDEO-/160632857098?pt=UK_Photography_Movie_Camera_Accessories&hash=item256676e20a

One of the reasons I never use my DSLR underground is because the screen is tiny and so judging focus is very difficult (either manual or working out if auto focus is working).

This looks like it could sort that problem; and involve another piece of expensive kit that can get filthy and trashed

Simon, do you really think that anything can improve the magnificent standard of photographs you already produce?
My avatar is a poor likeness.

Very nice of you Roy but I honestly don't think I've taken anything half-way decent in the past 2 years. Ever since I stopped using the old Nikon 8400 in fact.

I bought a 2nd hand DSLR about a year ago but the screen is so small it's impossible to focus on manual or judge if auto focus is correct 😢

For that price you could get an android tablet and get one of the many DSLR controllers for it

Never come across that Blober. How does that work?

Would only need a dirt cheap tablet since it would be just for this one job.

For above ground stuff I use it for 15 exposure bracketing (to make non manky HDR) You just need an on the go cable.

What camera do you have? My old D90 is supported by a few different programs

That's why I've resorted to a manual lens that I can focus by guessing the distance and setting it by the ft scale on the lens - then taking another half a dozen shots until I get it half right. And why I was so jealous of the focus peaking on Newstuff's Sony.

If your Canon's not supported, you might be able to hack the firmware via Magic Lantern or CHDK.

That Willy, but I think it's more the age of the camera and lack of liveview. It really is quite an old model.

Ah yes, that would be tricky to hack.
Actually I found liveview on the D700 such a pain to use that I leave it switched off. Dunno if the newer Canons are better in that regard.

Perhaps a laser distance meter could help solve the problem...

Bit of a clunky way to do it but if Im using my old Digital SLR (which has a naff lcd display on the back) I take a shot on manual focu then view the shot on the viewfinder and zoom into the picture, and see if it looks blurry in close and see if the focus was right. Make an adjustment and take another shot. Like I said its not perfect but its the only workaround Ive found with it.

You could always tote a gatso cam in there! Those things always seem to (annoyingly) get a stunningly clear shot in the dark. Well at least sharp enough to see my number plate 😠

Yup, that's exactly what I do. It just gets a bit tedious when the exposures are 20secs followed by another 20secs of noise reduction processing before I can see that it's useless.

I'm liking the thought of another gadget though! Even if it's a cheapo version using a pair of Poundstore laser pointers on an adjustable frame with the angles calibrated to display the range. Hmm... now there's an idea! 😎

Will revert to the trick of 3,300 lumens from the WiseLED, autofocus, knock it to manual focus, take shot and keep my fingers crossed
