Mike, Canon s95 is very good for the price, focuses well underground and produces sharp, colourful (if you want) images. I've always thought canon good at capturing colour and texture underground.

Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3
Lights: loads of different lights, good mixture of flood and spot.

Usually work on my own or in a team of 2 for setting up the lights in slate mines.
The lights are hidden on small tripods around the workings.
FT3 on tripod and 15 second exposure.

Lightpainting at work as it's a lot quicker. Cameras vary but usually Pentax W90 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT25

How do you take your photos underground now?

I turn my Fellows Caplamp up loud, camera adjusts itself to daytime mode and shoot accordingly. No tripod or long shutter time required!

For any of you having trouble autofocussing underground, go into your cameras settings and set it up so that you use a different button to focus from the one to open the shutter (if your camera can do this). Then you can set your focus on spot of light before you take your shot.

Panasonic Lumix LX3 , which replaced the Nikon 8400.

The 8400 was - and still is - an excellent bit of kit, although you had to get a good one: some seemed to have an Infinity setting that was ever so slightly out of focus.

The drawback was that it's quite a big camera and that the lens mechanism eventually ate enough mine to kill it.

The LX3 has proved very good, although it's not quite as obedient as the Nikon, farticularly when it comes to focussing (although that's counterbalanced by the power of more modern torches).

Conversely, it's more compact and some of the controls are more intuitive. No doubt with a bit of abuse the lens would also fail and it may not be as repairable as the 8400s were.

I never got myself a 8400, still intend to if I see one cheap 🙂

I've had friends, a girlfriend as helping hands when taking pics too, so much easier when there's someone to help you 🙂

Panasonic Lumix GX1 most of the time; I try to look after this one 'cos I use it as a general point and shoot above ground too. Very pleased with it underground, although focussing isn't as consistent as the old Nikon 8400. I still have one of those safey in a cupboard :)

Also use a Pansonic Lumix DMC FT4 for filthy trips. One of the little waterproof ones.

Most of the time these days I forget either tripod, tripod shoe, battery or memory card so don't take any photos but the intention is there 😉

Perhaps I should consider a cheaper alternative...

Canon 5DMkII + 24mm F/1.4

Lit with Fenix TK 35 or Petzl Tikka for softer more even light

Pentax K200D, 18-55 lens, Roy Fellowes light, sometimes Pentax Af-540FGZ flash, tripod, Tesco torch. Up to 30 sec exposure to get the depth of field
The Pentax performs even when muddy and wet, and the colour rendering is near to how my eye sees the reality,

Depends on how dirty and how sporting the mine is.

For walk in stuff and for real quality I use a tripod mounted Nikon D7000 and the awesomely sharp 11-16mm Tokina superwide. I light with my RF Trigon.

For more climby wadey sites I use a Panasonic Lumix DC3 - total manual control and a nice f2.0 Leica lens in a tiny package. This is a lovely little camera and copes with light painting quite well enough, but it isn't very robust and it's in the repair shop at the moment to work out if changing the lens unit can be done economically. Like all compact zooms, it acts like a bellows as it winds in and out, eventually sucking fine dust into the thread and jamming up.

Fingers crossed.
I don't like the look of that woodwork.

Shameless plug 😞 but I dug out some of my old cameras and took a group photo of them if anyone's interested:

Wow - I also have one of those old khaki Kodak large-format cameras. It's half-plate size, but it takes 7 X 5 Fidelity holders. Trouble is my light-meter's knackered, but if I could fix it I have toyed with the idea of some underground work with the camera as I've still got a 50 box of Tri-X sheets in the freezer. If I could be arsed to lug it all around, which is debatable...

That will not be a lug round what we had at Cambrian on Wednesday in all the snow and mud up and down with dive kit and camera kit THAT was a lug round... 2hrs each way 😢 got some nice shots of the underwater stairs though 😉
