Whats your recommended dslr?

Ive decided to buy a dslr for my Christmas present from swmbo (she doesnt know it yet) and was wondering what to get ..my budget is £500 and I want a wide angle lens included in that ..not asking alot am I 😞

So its over to you guys to point me in the right direction, I dont mind buying second hand which is probably what im going to end up with considering my budget.

I used to have a canon. It was quite nice and took great pictures but ...
I dropped it and replaced it with a nikon.
Technically there isnt much difference however ...
The nikon is much nicer to use. The controls are better organized (imho).
The canon was very menu driven. There was always a lot of menu delving and i quite often forgot to reset the settings.
The nikon has a special button combo to reset the custom settings.
To be fair to the cannon the dx0 series might be much better.

I would sugest that you goto a good camera shop and play see what fits your hands (the dxx0 are quite small).
Take your own memory card and then you can look at the pics after on your own computer.

Stretch your budget a touch, and you can snag things like this.

I have seen them as low as £500 recently, but they get snapped straight up at that price. No need for a grip, it's a Pro camera, and is inbuilt as standard. Any Canon EF/EOS lens will go straight on it. Fot third party lenses, you 'll need to check compatibility, some older Sigma's may not have focus or Aperture control.[url]

SimonRL has tried an Eos-1D underground, not sure which model though.

I've bought a Panasonic Lumix LX3, but I'm yet to give it a proper go underground.

What is is that Edd uses? Something very weatherproof iirc?

I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ28. Its cool, but then Ive only just started doing underground photography stuff!

I agree regarding the Canon. Have used an EOS1D IIN for a couple of years. Its bombproof - just wipe it down with a damp cloth, it also takes excellent pictures. If you need detailed advice PM me. Downside is its the size of a bomb and heavy as hell. Don't skimp on the lens and good S/H Canon ones are rare.

My preference is Pentax, the body seals are unbelievable. Get a WR lens and your good to go.

All the pro level cameras from canon and nikon are equally well sealed when combineded with pro lenses.

That's the trick with the pro dslrs, for full weather sealing you have to have the pro lenses, and boy do they cost!

That said, the big cause of camera failures for me have been dirt and moisture getting into the camera body through buttons and openings like the battery flap and CF card slot.

With careful use I'd suggest the lens is less susceptible to damage because it's not covered in buttons that you need to paw at with grubby fingers. And a bit of tape over the joint between the lens and the body won't do any harm.

I'm still enjoying my Sony Alpha.

I've used it underground a number of times. Most recently, in a trip into Wood Mine, the tripod overbalanced, slid a coupe of feet and it then fell from a ledge, landing 8 feet below. I was expecting shrapnel, instead the only damage was to the UV filter (that's why we cover lenses!) Lucky, very lucky!

Mmm debatable.
You are going to spent a lot less getting a Pentax rather than a conikon.

true the petax will be cheaper but its not the only weather sealed slr.
The d300 and its "kit" 15 -55 are though.
The lens is 900 vs 700 for the pentax equivalent.
I have no idea how they compare optically.
I know you can get a cheaper lens with the pentax but its soo much easier with f2.8 as they are optically better and focus soo much better.
The body is a similar difference so the nikon isnt that much more.
But as with anything you pays your money and take yoru choice
you will always end up spending more on lens anyway!

Edd is using Nikon D60 with a good 10-20 lens for messy/damp mines & Nikon D90 with the same lens for cleaner mines, both give very good results.

The Sigma 10-20 perchance?

I've got that on a D80 (above-ground use only) and it's the best camera-related investment I've ever made.
