At least 87 people are now known to have died in China's worst coal mine accident in two years, state media say.

Another 21 miners are missing after the blast at Xinxing pit in Hegang City in Heilongjiang province.

The toll has more than doubled from 42 dead earlier. Some 528 workers were in the mine when the blast hit before dawn on Saturday local time, said Xinhua.

Seems as if this is happening every other week. They seem to have a terrible safety record the Chinese. Really saddens me deeply to hear stories like this about miners killed or trapped. Why does this happen a lot over there?

they don't care, plenty more where they came from.. from what I have seen on the oil and gas side, chinese safety and procurement is extremely lax

Same in rail on the secondary and industrial lines... we were behind steam locos at an opencast coal mine in workmans coaches... there was a bright yellow wagon (made of wood) which was between the workmans coaches and the spark throwing loco.... when we got there we asked why the wagon was yellow... oh replied the interpreter looking quite concerned... that todays high explosive delivery... 😮 😮
We got taxis back later

We only have to look back two hundred years to some of the disasters which occurred on or under this island. 400+ at Universal in South Wales springs to mind. Luckily for our industry what remains of it, is now covered by the wonderous Mines and Quarries Act, which has over the years prevented major disasters from occurring. The Chinese would do well to follow suit, along with the punishments it one breaks the law. :guns:
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

The company I work for has quarrying operations in China and has been told that the authorities only have to be notified (or is it only investigate ? not sure) if more than 2 people die. Fortunately our Chinese employees follow our in house safety guidelines which are more stringent than that required by local law.
Although even if they adopted British or European safety regs, the sheer number of coal mines means there will still be serious accidents, but that does not excuse improving the dreadful current low level of safety.

Sorry Ty, I am afraid I do not know the Daniels bros. I believe their company is based in the Bodmin area, which is 1 hour's drive from Camborne, so I guess I am unlikely to meet them.

Um, if there is one single thing you cannot accuse the Chinese of, it is not bothering to exact stringent punishments to law breakers.
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.
