I've been sent the following, not sure if anybody can shed any light on it, but if anybody can I'm sure the chap asking the question will be very grateful :)

Quote:

I'm trying to tie down the name of a gold mine. I have limited info, based on an almost illegible inscription, but I know so little about mines. This is a long shot ...

It's definitely a gold mine, and guessing at a deep one (ie. following a 45 degree or so angle down). Based on fairly strong circumstantial evidence, it's in South Africa, probably the Transvaal. Would have been working perhaps 1900, perhaps a bit earlier or could be a couple of decades later (pure guesses here).

The name: here's the illegible bit. The first three characters are GIN. There are five more characters, but I'm not even certain these are part of one word. Could be GIN then & or S or 8 or something, then perhaps BO, then another that might be x or & or some numeral, then finally a 'g' or something else. My guess would be for one word, though that might be wrong.

Might this ring any bells?

Looking at the history of Transvaal gold companes on the Rand the nearest I can find are:

Cinderella Deep Gold Mining Company

Cinderella Gold Mining Company

I know its "C" not "G" but non similar with a "G"

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
