The death toll from a fire that broke out at an abandoned gold mine in South Africa at the weekend has risen to 61, reports say.

How do you set alight a gold mine? The ones I have visited in Mid-Wales are very wet and lacking in timber shoring?
Cutting coal in my spare time.

Could they have been using the ancient practice of firesetting to break the rock, as the illegal miners probably had no drills or explosive? Perhaps a lack of comprehension of the problems involved resulted in death by suffocation?

I worked at West Driefontein gold mine in 97/98. From experiance the fire could have been started deliberately. But also, it could have been caused by a seismic event. When large areas of old mine workings collapse this results in a mini earth tremor, like wise with a sudden collapse of old mine workings (we are talking large areas) the sudden pressure on the old timber supports cause the timber to heat up. The old timber can heat up enough in a few milli seconds to spontaniously combust. The old workings will no doubt be dry as the nearby mines will be keeping the water table with their pumps.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
