Placer mining was quite extensive around Nome. Alaska, and I would imagine many of the locals were kept busy on the beach. The photo shows a man panning for gold on the beach at Nome early part of the last century. I wasn't sure where to upload it, (didn't like to ask Simon to add "identify as beach" 🙂 ) so popped it in here.

Interesting. I looked at this thinking it was local.

I gather that gold was found when they "panned" portreath beach and somewhere, I have a picture of chaps panning for Tin Oxide on Trevaunance beach.

I have often thought about panning a small stream the Truro side of Baldhu, as that is gold bearing.....

I would have thought you would have needed a lot of gold to register in the higher sands of a beach.....

I don't know enough about the geology of the area but I suspect there might be more gold on the beach than one would expect.

RTZ had plans to open a big opencast pit centered on Dolfrwynnog. The hole would have 2 miles wide by 5 miles long and over 1000ft deep. They were going to mine the large deposit of low grade disseminated copper with associated gold starting in the early 1980's. This would have lasted 25 years. They were then going to build a massive reservoir and use the water to generate electricity. They had planning permission for this, but they also wanted to dredge the entire estuary from Barmouth up to half a mile below Ty'n y Groes where the gravels start to climb.
The people at Barmouth objected and managed to stop that part of the plan and RTZ walked away from the whole lot.
Gold is where you find it

Thats a big hole! The only good thing about dredging the Mawdach would that they would probably found the rest of the Lancaster bomber thats in there!
