I recently spent a few days holiday in the Marseille district and took a day trip to Cassis, a cute little port a short distance east of Marseille - partly with a view to visiting what is one of the most famous quarries in France, the source of a distinctive pinky grey limestone used for the base of the Statue of Liberty and Alexandria Docks. We got within about 200 yards of the place when the French environmental agency or such-like closed all access roads and tracks because of the risk of fire. I didn't see much point in having an 'I flew 14,000 kilometres to see this quarry' rant - they were very apologetic - c'est la vie. I did manage to find a smaller quarry with a couple of artistically configured forklifts but it didn't quite make up for missing the main game. Hopefully the next visitor might have a bit more luck.
There's a few distant shots in the Cassis user album for everyone's perusal. Enjoy !
