In remembrance of the once flourishing dutch coal mining industry, two old mine buildings have been preserved as monuments. These are the building, equipment and tower of Shaft No.2 of the ON-1 mine, and the socalled "Nulland Shaft" of the Domaniale Mine. The link to the first is down but the latter is up and running. I wonder what people think of the idea. (I could make a fair guess). The photos are great.

Nice Find.... fascinating architecture, at least they saved it... and it was well worth the effort given its unique design.

I remember being at Maastrict station about '89 & there was a set of steel head sticks very close by - they were quite impressive if I recall. I can't see any reference in the linked website - anyone know if they're still there?

Fascinating. It tells here http://www.citg.tudelft.nl/live/pagina.jsp?id=18b578ea-2cba-418f-8df9-0577c19373dd&lang=en  of how at great depth the coal was degassed and the methane became trapped in a higher layer of permeable rock.

I always wondered about North Sea gas, since we seem to have coalfields extending offshore, and dipping. If the carboniferous is continuous across the North Sea, it will be very deep, way below the oil and gas wells, and presumably the coal will have been reduced to something resembling graphite.

I doubt that there would be any prospect of mining at that depth!

I certainly didn't realise that the Slochteren field is one of the largest gas fields in the world.

This must be the one I saw, just got my stations muddled!
The site ICLOK linked to is facsinating though - there's a couple of good photos of local pits (Florence & Hem Heath) I've not seen before & as for the stuff in the Ruhr....
Thanks Guys 🙂
