Went back to Cults on Saturday for some more exploring. We found the entrance to the other section of the mine and it looks like it's pretty big down there.
As stated on the NAMHO conference website, the entrance does indeed contain a few coloured strings leading to various destinations following a police investigation, but I felt that 'festooned' was a slightly strong description. It was getting quite late on in the day by the time we got there so we thought we'd follow one of the strings and see where it took us. After about 15 minutes walk we got to the end of the string and the mine just kept on going in every direction so we followed it back out.
We plan to go back armed with laser measures, pencils and paper!
We also went back into the flooded entrance, this time armed with chest waders. We got about 20m into the water before it got too deep, hopefully later in the year the water level might drop a bit as it gets drier. Stepping into the side chamber that contains 3 water pipes we were able to venture further than I got last time. Ducking through a hole in the rock that the water pipes go through we emerged into a chamber that was flooded about halfway up. One could walk into the middle without the water coming over the tops of the waders.
Going back up beside the pipes we discovered that as they turned the corner you could actually squeeze under them and there was a passage that the pipes ran through. Water was actually flowing past us from the main body of the mine in a small stream under the pipes. We walked beside the pipes until they just stopped abruptly. Carrying on in the stream we followed the passage until we both suddenly sank up to our waists in orange mud! At this point we could see the passage carried on a lot further, but as it was impossible to tell how deep the mud was and how far it carried on we thought we'd stop for the day. We will go back in there when the water level is a bit lower and when getting to the muddy part we'll probably go with at least four of us and rope together so the leader can test for mud and get pulled out if necessary!
I didn't take the camera in with me because it was just a recce and frankly with all the water and mud I'm glad I didn't! I'll be getting one of the EWA Marine housings before taking a camera in there!
More news when we go back...
