Are there any experts on this website with regards to small mines in South Wales (coal)?

I'm one of the moderators for the Welsh coal mines website. Having worked underground in NCB/BC mines just looking for more info on some specific small mines in the Merthyr area.

I can recommend two books:

SMALL MINES OF SOUTH WALES [= Vol 1] by A J Booth 1995 96 pp over 120 photos, 32 maps. A superb book of black and white photos of some of the privately owned mines in South Wales interspersed with many anecdotes. For each of the 32 mines there is NGR, description type of coal, method of haulage etc. A timely historical record. SB

SMALL MINES OF SOUTH WALES Vol 2 by A J Booth 1997 112 pp 145 photos, 32 maps. A superb book of black and white photos of some of the privately owned mines in South Wales interspersed with many anecdotes. For each of the 34 mines there is NGR, description type of coal, method of haulage etc. A timely historical record.

Cutting coal in my spare time.

Best thing I can suggest miner1985 is to ask the question in detail, there's some very knowledgeable people on here but it's often a case of the more you ask the more people can answer 🙂

Got both books. But the mines I'm looking for are not mentioned (or not in enough detail). Am currently in discussion with an ex NCB surveyor (on the Wlesh coal mines website). By the way Rhydychwr 1 did you work in any of the pits in South Wales? How did the winder perform on Sunday?

No, I am a teacher [retired] not a miner, although I live in Cwmpark, over a mine 🙂

Had the winder going most days last week. Compressor has gone back now. I was told it cost £1k a day to run. Everytime I suggest getting an electric motor I am threatend with excumication. :guns:

It'd be much cheaper if you sent it back home, tell 'em 😉
We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......
