This week we're planning a mooch around Bryn y Felin (or Brynfelin, or even Bryn-Felin  ) copper mine beside the Glasyn Gorge. There are some open stopes to look into so bring SRT kit if you fancy heading down. Or just come with a camera and enjoy the scenery. :)

Meet around 6:15pm in the laybye here:

And I declare that the correct name should "Bryn-y-Felin". All in agreement?

The one combination I missed - and that is how it appears on the OS map. So it gets my vote!

True, but that is the only place it does so appear. (Named after the house Bryn-y-Felin and the nearby Coed Bryn-y-Felin?)

Inspector of Mines Reports, Mining Journal (1851 onwards), Carnarvon & Denbigh Herald (1864), Public Record Office (BT 31/ 550/2230) and various other publications all refer to it as Brynfelin. :smartass:

Well found Dave. Did they have anything interesting to say about the mine? I'd pretty much drawn a blank on my searches.

Err No. 😉.

My take is Brynfelin as a place name (Bryncrug; Brynrefail etc) rarther than a description, Bryn-Y-Felin.

Apart from anything else I have a mean dislike of anything hyphenated!

Re Bryn-y-Felin Copper Mine(dissused) o/s map1840 - 1918 (or whatever).
After many hours of gleaning the interwobble only only managed to find out that the Powder house/Magazine I pointed out to David was dated 1540 (Tudor ish).... There also appear to be two other disused shafts to the South, above the Bridge house on the same map, with a level twenty odd metres North of said house .
Anyway just thought I'd put in my pennyworth ramblings.
