This week we're heading slightly off-piste to "Upper Bwlch y Plwm", an intriguing little mine about which little seems to be known. Even its correct name is a little uncertain. So any information will be gratefully received! :flowers:

SRT kit is advisable, and there's waist deep water in one area so prepare to get wet if you want to see as much as possible. :o
If that sounds too daunting, come along anyway - there's plenty to see on the surface and the views are lovely. :)

Meet at the Cafe in Carreg, Llanfrothen:

6.15pm or a little earlier to enjoy a very reasonably priced coffee.

Been reading a lot recently of 'waist deep water' and 'just a few inches of breathing space available' is the just pure madness or are you guys hiding wetsuits under your clothes? 😉 I'm intrigued...

Haha, a couple of our group do seem to relish physical discomfort, and they give the rest of us some entertainment.
This particular waist deep section was actually well below critical depth on our last visit, so unless last night's storm is repeated, it shouldn't be too unpleasant. And it's just a side tunnel leading to an interesting rise so very much an optional part of the visit.
There's a good chance that the rise connects to an opening further along the hillside. We're hoping to confirm this by positioning people above and below and calling through.

All the time! Like Labradors, some of them can't resist checking if that puddle leads somewhere interesting... but not to the degree we carry tanks around, those are what Marvel Comic hero's are made of. Next time you see someone sweating uncomfortably in Tesco, you'll have spotted one of the Thursday nighter's ready for action. On the other hand they may be unrelated and just about to need your cpr skills!;)

There are some random adits between top and bottom, none of which I investigated, and may connect with neither. There were some bats up top, but come June, that should be ok.

Yes, there are numerous adits and stopes across the hillside. There is a shaft nearer to BYP and a very interesting adit with deep water about 150m across from the old farm house. Afraid I can't send my plot of all I found from the phone!! Whatever you do, enjoy yourselves, stay safe.

Thanks Robin, it was your map that Edwyn overlaid onto Google Earth and found that the long passage in (lower) ByP ends very close to these upper workings.

It does suggest that they intended to make a connection, presumably for drainage purposes.

Good point about the bats, they are the reason we kept away through the winter.
