Hello, I noticed today that the main entrances to the underground sections of this quarry have been sealed (combination locks) and equipped with handrail routes and staple foot holds by a commercial ' adventure' company.
Good work on equipping the access, but can they legally seal off the passages? Does anybody know who owns this quarry?
Cheers

If you mean Rhiwbach mine, then it is owned by NRW and the access is administered by Cave Access Ltd. The mine is gated for public safety but any bonafide explorer can gain access through the CAL permit system which is super easy and quick. The site is used professionally by a number of organisations, from adventure companies to outdoor education centres, who have invested greatly in the equipping of the mine and its safety inspections.
Not seen the sun for months. Now evolving to see in the dark.

Hi Pete, many thanks for the prompt and informative response. I was curious about the situation, which I know is similar in other places - I happened to take shelter in the quarry yesterday whilst out for a walk in the foul weather!
You have answered my queries.
Cheers

As a director of CAL I can assure you that the requirements of individual explorers are foremost in our minds.
But if you visit the mine, please try to avoid contact with any of the commercial groups. These people depend on use of the place for their livelihood.

Can I just add ...

As a recent visitor to Parc mine through the CAL agreement,I found it an extremely painless process .
The contact and information provided was most excellent AND resulted in a fantastic days exploring .
Parc mine was far beyond my expectations .

Top work all those involved .

Hi Roy, that's good - many thanks.
My interest was sparked yesterday because my wife remarked that many years ago, when she was head of outdoor pursuits at a north Wales school, she used to take groups on the through trip from the entrance in the wood/forest and out into the quarry. She was impressed by the standard of the equipping that we could see through the grill - nothing like that back in the day! Times have changed for the better.
Cheers
