I took a party from Parys Underground Group for a tour of Cwm on Saturday and had the intention of making it to the 'hidden' caban on Fl. G for lunch. After a look in the Queen Mary caban, off we set. Got to where I thought the small caban was but found a collapse in the passage. Miles was with a party just back towards the QM so we went back and I asked Miles if I'd been in the right passage. He came back with us and I was right...

I didn't know the way through the passage wall into the chamber (32?) which gave access to the 'back window' of the caban so he led us through. Sure enough, there IS a big collapse just in front of the caban's 'front door'. Not only that but there's a lot of hanging death still to come down - some big slabs peeling away.

The hole in the wall to Ch. 32(?) is also seriously stressed with big lumps above your head likely to come down very soon.

Suggest that this eastern area is now out of bounds as unsafe. Whether it will ever be safe to go back to the caban by digging a way through the collapse is debatable - it will end up impossible if and when all the hanging death comes down... Piti mawr 😞.

Thanks for posting this, Ciive,

Am (hopefully) showing a couple of new people around in October, and was planning to show them the hidden caban.

I'm not really that surprised by this turn of events, as much of the area directly east of the 34 incline is in a similar state, as been mentioned before by myself and others.

When I was down on the floor G levels near the hidden caban about a year ago, sprinkles of fresh slate. noticeable by it's lighter ash-like colour, together with a fresh slate smell was much in evidence, together with flakey de- lamination in the walls.

Floor F, also becomes suddenly and dramatically unstable in roughly the same area

Think the Llyn Bach cracks ultimately have something to do with it

The 'hole in the wall' has been bad since I first visited this area nearly 4 yrs ago and on each visit it's looked worse with more bits flaking off. Now there are deep, wide cracks in the big lumps above, can't be long now before it comes down...

I showed the lads how the strata changes from good rock to bad over just a few feet when you head east on F & G Floors. As you say, the far eastern reaches of Cwm need treating with utmost respect - basically, keep out! Bechod... 😞

Thanks for the warning Clive. Sad to hear that, no more Victorian lunches in that caban then :(

Lets hope more collapses will not follow.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by
