Thank you for this interesting update. Do you know how the contractors are gaining access (boat?) and where they are removing spoil to (surface by boat / stacking in side tunnels?)?

They are reopening a shaft, have fitted full winding gear and will be working around that section of tunnel. The work is being done in stages working inbye from the portal. They are now so far from the portal that the shaft access was needed for ease and safety. The shaft bottom is being emptied of old guide ropes and debris to regain entry into the tunnel. There will be a roofbolting session too. The contractor is SES and Wardell-Armstrong consultants.

IIRC, it is Cae Mawr shaft up on the top of Halkyn Montain - between Pen y Bryn and Olwyn Goch. Pen y Bryn is well sealed with a massive concrete cap...

They are working at Caeau shaft, downstream of pen-y-Bryn, upstream of Herwards/ the portal.

Cae Mawr shaft is a few miles upstream.

May refer to work carried out around 2013.

May be of interest.

Thanks Staffordshirechina, Morlock and everyone else for most informative links and summaries. Taken together they provide a most useful impression of the works and how the tunnel has been accessed to carry them out.

ant 89,
Thanks for posting the update on the remedial work being carried out by United Utilities, clearly the message has got through, that you cannot just leave these underground drainage levels alone without the probability of some surface damage.
The note you posted by the company to local caving clubs is interesting, since it implies that they are aware that exploration is taking place.
I wonder if they are in fact just letting things, happen, in this respect, since GCC could legitimately claim that they have being doing this for years and nobody has objected to them officially?

I believe GCC were specifically told by United Utilities that access was not allowed
As far as I know GCC tried very hard for quite some time to persuade United Utilities to allow access but to no avail.

UKCaving as an unbiased and reliable source of facts?

FPOP - If you had contacted or spoken to the relevant people in person you might have a less cynical view. We are all very similar in what we want and enjoy. It's a shame such polarisation is encouraged by a vocal minority.

To add to that - this place is a welcome haven from all the nasty bitterness that plagues the underground online world at the moment. Long may it continue! And if I sounded bitter in my last post, then that's not what I was trying to convey - it was more the point that AditNow is by far a very comfortable place to ask things, get straight answers, feel welcome etc etc.

I think that was interpreted as "no access via our access points" which is likely why GCC spent so much time creating a new route right next to their old one but via a different system that is not UU property

Agree, it will be even better if/when they get the GoogleEarth Milwr thingy back up.

Roy I am in complete agreement with your assessment of the Flintshire lead Mines site.
One obvious question for me is:
Who put it up?

Chris's site. I 'think' he's a member of GCC and NWCC amongst others. Fair play to him and them, they've done an awful lot of research and exploration around Halkyn Mountain and Chris especially has made most of his research available in the Milwr books and the website. Some years ago, he was employed by the county to do a feasibility study into making North Henblas into a tourist mine. Unfortunately it turned out to have too many problems regarding parking and general access problems...

UCET, the other local group, have also done a lot of work around Halkyn and N Wales. A lot of their findings can be found on their website - some is free access, other bits are members only or by registering on their site. They've cleared and bolted / safety lined several good 5routes in lead mines other than Halkyn / Milwr. Good for them!

It was pictures of the Milwr Tunnel and the Halkyn mines on the now defunct GCC website that first properly ignited my interest in old mines around 2000. I joined the club and was a member for a couple of years but difficult personal circumstances at the time meant I never made it along to any of their trips, although I enjoyed reading the newsletters.

Around 2004 I joined Sub-Brit and finally made it on a trip down Emmer Green chalk mine with them, then joined WCMS in 2005 and began going underground more regularly.

Still not been down Milwr tunnel or the associated working though……

You should organise a trip for WCMS Alex.

Chris.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
