Seeing as how the evenings are getting lighter, we can now venture a little further off the beaten track on a Thursday night ๐Ÿ˜‰
An easy one to start with, this week we are going to visit the Moelwyn / Bwlch Stwlan area.
Lets meet up by the Lakeside Cafe, here:

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.985558&lon=-3.965903&z=19.1&r=0&src=msa

at 1800 hours.

Not sure if there is much in the way of SRT but I'm bringing my kit on the off-chance... ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm not promising, but I will try to borrow the key to the Stwlan Dam access road, but it may not work out so please be prepared for a walk up to the dam, and then on to the mines. It's quite a hike, but fairly steady, and, with the long-range forecast looking good, worth doing for the view alone
And..."ahem"...we could certainly do with the exercise...
Usual culprits will be in attendance.....post a reply if you can make it :flowers:
Any new-comers are of course welcome, even if you just fancy a pleasant walk ๐Ÿ˜‰

See you all there

Yup, I certainly need the exercise. So here's hoping for a working key! :flowers:

Yes, I will be there. Is it true that there is a defribulator, an oxygen tent and a team of scantily clad nurses stationed on Stwlan Dam?????????

Yea, but sightings are highly dependant on your medication.

I'll be able to come if someone can rustle up some form of transportation to and from Bangor  No worries if nobody can do it, Jay should be free next week I think ๐Ÿ˜‰

I will be travelling straight to Blaenau from Saltney, but a lift back to Bangor is no problem at all

I can offer a lift from Bangor to Tanygrisiau (and back if needed) but I'm working on Friday so can't stretch to a detour to Holyhead this time - unless we finish very early, which seems unlikely.

Unfortunately I have not been able to borrow the key to the Stwlan Dam road.....First Hydro's Far Eastern parent company are very twitchy about Public Liability insurance and un-escorted vehicles etc etc blah blah. I have one more person to try but it's only fair to warn you all that we are likely to be in for a trek up to the dam rather than a leisurely drive ๐Ÿ˜
Having said that, its not THAT far or THAT steep so I'm still in
My Special Forces training will see me yomp up there in about ten minutes

I'm hoping to venture up there this afternoon to look at the conditions. The road is clear but the mountain flank looks like its covered in sheet ice. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I will contact Sinker (coz I only have his number!) and let him know. Will see you all, either at the mine or in the car park if its too trecherous.

Don't think I'll be there, wasn't very well yesterday and still haven't quite recovered plus I'm sure you don't want me to share it with you.

Hope you get better soon, the feeling cold only lasted a few hours for me though every now and again my guts feel like they're trying to crawl away somewhere and hide.
I keep looking out of the window and haven't seen any lights so assume you're on the South East side of Bwlch Stwlan.

I hope you're both feeling better soon. You probably made the right decision as it was a bit chilly up there. But by 'eck it was fun! Mine exploring where you need a rope to negotiate the ice covered snow just to reach the entrance!
The mine itself was very interesting, almost certainly not slate - zinc perhaps?

And Pingu's new appendage was a sight to behold. :o

I'm trying to get my bearings...
This photo is the only aerial one I have showing the area:
http://pages.bangor.ac.uk/~oss108/images/aerial/200504221_3302_crop.jpg
2 entrances are seen clearly towards the top left. I'm thinking we must have entered just below the path, that the upper of those 2 is the one with the fence around that we reached from the inside, the lower of the 2 is walled up, then there's a another just below them which was blocked near its entrance - near the slab on the kink in the path. Anyone agree?
It all looked a bit different covered in snow.

So the big question, can anyone tell us anything about this mine?

Hymac?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
