Hi everyone,

Hope somebody might be able to help? Has anyone any idea if a map of the tunnel layout at Hendre ddu Slate Quarry is available - clutching at straws I know, but interested to see which directions they go and how long they are.

Also, I know it's disused, but who does it belong to?? Questions, questions - hope someone can answer them!!!

There are I think two Hendre Ddu slate quarries... one near Cwm Pennant (Dolbenmaen), one near Aberllefenni.

If it's the Aberllefenni one you're interested in http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Hendre-Ddu-Slate-Mine-2-User-Album/  then Thorpey's probably you're man!

Oh, and welcome to the web site :)

my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Morning Simonrl,

You work late!!!

Many thanks for the reply - yep, I'm interested in Hendre Ddu in
Dovey Forest (near Aberllerfenni) - have seen the pics from Thorpey - awesome!!

Cheers for getting back to me, it's appreciated.

I don't think the tunnels were very long - perhaps only long enough to go into one or two chambers. Have you seen the plans in The Mawddwy, Van and Kerry Railways by Oakwood Press? I can't remember how detailed they were but they did give some indication.

Hi Merddinemrys,

Thanks for that info, shall start investigating again - I've been watching a You Tube video of Hendre Ddu and the tunnels look huge and some of the caves seem vast, but that's video for you!?

Keep the info coming, it's much appreciated!!

If you're visiting the area, treefelling at Minllyn Slate Quarry just up the valley at Dinas Mawddwy has just revealed a lot more of the lower workings there. I haven't been in the lower workings, but the upper workings have a few interesting bits to see.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
