Hi Gang
I was walking around the river Alyn on Saturday and included my old favourite the Devils Gorge.
There are a couple of other stopes just off the Leete Walk. Can anyone explain more, what mines, veins etc.
I have BGS Bernard Smith and the CJ Williams book but cannot work it out.

hiya Roy there are loads of mines there but all are nearly filled in and with it being sssi now weve got no chance of getting in anywhere as we would have to dig so the only thing left is caves and one or two mines. Devis Gorge was originally a spar mine but very short. their is another close by in an old dissused very small quarry hidden in the woods on the same side of the river, i have some pictures here i need to put up of it, again very short but it could also have been filled in at end of drive but not sure on this one may be good ground ahead, the alyn was a big mining area many moons ago it seems nature has done a hell of a lot of reclaiming as its hard to find anything at all 😉

Ha, I climbed up into the workings a few years ago and saw what I believed to be spar, so I was right.
Anyone know any history?

Funny thing about loggerheads is the way way the river can `disapear`further downstream-all to do with natural underground tunnels, and milwr tunnel affecting the local water table.Picked up an interesting leaflet talking about the mines from the visitor centre, concerning Cadole (`Cat-Hole`!) mine etc.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
