Oh well least we know now... I was with Penmorfa and said I wondered if the beams were inserted into the end but based what I thought I saw on my pics, I thought they were solid...

No apology required, I was in two minds myself from the photos and some nagging doubts from experience.:)

The joints which appear to have been filled with molten metal are probably filled with Beaumonts Egg, a mixture of beeswax, fiddler's rosin, finest iron borings and lamp black, (of Tay Bridge Disaster infamy).

Just on the subject of bridges, this is a local bridge at the old Derby Friargate station... it still stands and has beautiful cast work... Thanks to Sougher for sending me the link!

There's a very nice one over the Main Line in Brum, not sure if the Tie bars are original.
