Some news from the Friends of Cwmorthin front line, and what we have been doing and what’s planned for coming months ahead.
Its been a pretty quiet year on site with most work being done behind the scenes. But we are planning a series of work weekends before the year is out. We would also like to say a big thank you to all that have donated this year or given a helping hand in anyway. The amount equipment and material donated this year has rocketed, leaving us it a great position for 2009.

Other News

Managers Hut
Many of you will be aware since the beginning of the year we have been in talks with the owners of the old mine buildings at Cwmorthin, with the aim of getting a lease on the old manager’s hut. We are happy to announce that has now been secured and we are now full steam ahead to put plans together to secure the building from any further deteriation.
The big concern is the roof and even though it looks like it in pretty good condition it is far from it. We feel that there is no other choice but to pull the roof of in the new-year and relay it. We would like to here from anyone that is a roofer and that could help us with this, or even advise.

Generator
A few months ago FOC was able obtain a large diesel generator by a consortium of donations. Weighing in at 2.34 tons it is no small bit of kit and is a ex MOD. Being 50 years old it is still going strong and all what was needed was a little tender loving care. The plan is it for to be permanently installed on lake level to provide power for lighting and equipment. No date has been set for it to be installed, but its likely to be early 2009.

Cwmorthin in the News
Cwmorthin is to be in the news. There is a planned BBC radio interview to take place over the October work weekend (day to be confirmed) It is for the Roy Noble show which is broadcast every weekday afternoon. It will be part of a series of articles done in recent months under the theme of 'hidden gems' - the sorts of places that most people don't go to.
