No offense meant towards Welsh speakers, in fact I have great respect for any of us who speak Welsh and understands these posts, but I only speak English and would prefer it if posts were in English- is "diolch" part of the question or an extra? I havn't a clue and can't be of any help. I'd imagine all Welsh speakers on here can also speak English, so LAP could we keep it all one language please?

Now now, I'm sure you understand 'Diolch'! Besides, I had enough trouble working out your signature ;)

I suspect the concept of a language policy hasn't entered SimonRL's mind, so perhaps we might merely say that we'll keep an eye on things and if anything needs doing, then it will be. Obviously, signatures which gently poke fun will continue to be allowed

Looks like some sort of incline to me?

It looks as if there might be one of the four-legged "tripod" cranes at top left?

I'd certainly never considered a language policy, and really don't want to impose one, but can we at least ask that people consider others with their signatures?

I can't speak or write Dutch (for example), so if I did a badly spelt and nonsensical Dutch signature I would imagine it could cause offence to any Dutch people reading it.

So perhaps our posting signatures should be limited to languages that are either our first language or a language we are fluent in.

Languages are an important part of a country's culture, and this is a site that spans all the countries of the UK.

On one hand if somebody has a genuine interest in learning a language then that should be appluaded and encouraged, but bits of different languages, possibly not making a lot of sense, crop up in post subjects, messages, photo votes etc., then at best it will irritate people and at worst insult.

So basically, if you're going to use your 2nd language in your signature, or scattered around other bits of the site, that's fine as long as you do it properly! Otherwise don't be surprised if it annoys a few people.

Now then, can I get back to mines please ;)

Regarding the Hollands Quarry picture. It is one of a pair which we used for the cover of "Candles to Caplamps" - and it is possible, given the usual artistic exaggeration of the period, to match them to an 1856 map of Holland's Old vein and Back vein workings. For exaggeration, you only have to look at the fantastic imagery of Penrhyn quarries which were produced!

If I can find a copyright free one, I'll post it.

OK I've put two Victorian views of Penrhyn in the archive album. This is one of them:

I think the phrase Dante-esque springs to mind!

That would be the "Talcen Mawr" in the Penrhyn image, I guess?

It was a huge (125,000 tonnes it seems) of rock that stood in the middle of the quarry until it was demolished on 27th April 1895 by using 7½ tons of gunpowder!
