Hello. Don't know if anyone in the Redruth area can help me with some information. I've been doing some family research and have come up with two names of ancient ancestors. My investigations show an Amos Nichols, born in Redruth on April the 17th 1787, mining engineer, and John Hart, born in Cambourne sometime in the 1780's, miner. He moved to Dawlish in Devon around 1800. Was wondering if any of you good folks could shed any light on these two men. Many thanks, Pingu.

There is an Amos Nichols, baptised at St Euny church in Redruth on 15/4/1787, with his family in the 1851 Census at 1 Brewery Road, Redruth. He is a master mason, not a mining engineer, but he must be the same guy. I'm afraid that I couldn't find anything on John Hart.

Many thanks for this Mike. He may be one and the same. The Nichols family later moved to South Devon and somewhere along the line got involved/married or something with the Hart family. Numerous Harts are buried in St Gregory's church in Dawlish. Apparently they were builders of repute. Family legend has it that they were builders in Cornwall, they then built a lot of property in Dawlish, moving to Reading and then Brentford, finally going bust after the first war. I guess I really need to head to sunny Cornwall for more research, instead of moist North Wales. :lol::lol:

In the light of your further comments above, Pingu, I had another look further on in the 19th century. There was only one marriage registered in Devon between 1861 and 1901 between a Nicholls and a Hart. That was between Amos Andrew Nicholls, the grandson of the Amos born Redruth in 1787, and Charlotte Lucy Hart, daughter of John Hart; she was born Dawlish (Newton Abbot to be exact) in 1853. John Hart her father was a shoemaker, born Ashcombe in 1800. The family were living in Chelsea in the 1891 Census and in Paddington in 1901 and 1911. Amos was a house decorator.

This doesn't tie in with family legend, but in my experience family history seldom does!
