It is with much regret to mention the passing of John Tonkin. John T was a true giant among cornishmen in terms both of physical stature, and for his boundless knowledge of cornish mining. It was indeed a pleasure to be able to meet John on each occasion just to absorb some of his considerable knowledge in this field. A true cornishman never forgotten.

I'm saddened to hear that, great bloke and very knowledgeable, I've still got some hand written notes he did for me about 15 years ago concerning some old China clay workings.

R.I.P. John.

He came to our house and copied out the entire Cost Book by hand for a local mine. I recall going out collecting and underground with him in the 80s when I was at school.
