I was in the Bissoe cycle cafe over the week end when I overheard a conversation about a mystery tunnel below the Nangiles spoil heap. have passed the above the spot probably scores of time over the years, I was quite intrigued.
I had always though that the adit to Nangiles was down by the County Adit Portal ? Yesterday being in the area again I quickly found the adit "featured in the conversation" Edited Can anyone tell me what each "one down by CA portal" and the "new to me" one are about. also a small opening some 50 yards or so Eastwards of the new one in the undergrowth ,

The tunnel that you are talking about is not Nangiles Adit but Nangiles Manway, which is a tunnel leading to the main engine shaft. Its absolutely fascinating inside there, but take care if you go in as there is a bloody great shaft at the end!

There is no adit down by the CA adit but there is part of the old CA system which connects with Nangiles by way of a loose passage, this comes in at the water level of the shaft at the end of the manway. There is a lower Nangiles adit at river level bricked up a way inside.

I was hoping Roy M or a Stu alias would come in on this as I am an up country man and certainly not the expert.

If get poking about down there in summer beware adders, damned things, Grr
My avatar is a poor likeness.

the water level is about 15 feet below adit now Roy because of the pumping at w/jane back last summer the water dropped 20 feet in a week and you could make out the top of another level shame the water didn't go down any more:(

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
