Does anyone have any information regarding the mining of any minerals or metals within Trethowel woods?

There's an iron mine marked on the maps just outside the woods, check out 'Old Maps' site but also still marked on OS 1:25000 as shaft (dis)

Hi and welcome,
are you going to formally introduce yourself before picking our brains? ::)
In answer to your question I have checked the HJ maps, it does show as an old iron mine.
Further adits, shafts etc are shown not too far away but am unsure as to whether anything is still open or not.
Are you planning to have a poke around?

Colleague of mine in St. Austell was considering looking at it last year, but after looking at access in the area, we concluded that you would need the land owners permission to access this some features of this mine.
From what he recalls Goethite was mined here.
Although HJ's map puts the Iron works nearer to Trenance woods.
Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

I had a look round earlier whilst travelling between appointments, the whole area looks interesting.
But as you say land owners permission would be advised as its not an easy nip in to the woods - you are on full view.

You got me curious, I have spent a while on the cornwall interactive map, there is a lot to look at in the general area, plenty of adits, shafts, tips etc.
However in my experience a lot of adits in clay country are made of cheese so be careful

Hi, my interest is historical as I own The Waterwheel Inn, formerly Higher Blowing House which is adjacent to the wood and would have been part of the same property at some time. A lovely lady called Jane owns it now and kindly allows me to walk the dog in the woods. There are several areas which show signs of mining but I couldn't find any reference to them on OS maps. The two mine shafts on the field above Trenance wood fell open during the winter but have now been covered over as there was a risk of the cows falling in. They were vertical shafts from what I could see. Thank you for your information and any more would be great. Francesca.

Hi,
How long have you owned the waterwheel inn?
If you use the cornwall council online interactive map it shows various information on mine workings, the further you zoom in the more specific it is.
Would you happen to have any photographs of the open mine shafts in the fields above you?

My Colleague at work (Par) lives very near to this area and also interested in this mine, so will pass this info on to him.
Anyway there is some info on the Council website:
http://crocat.cornwall.gov.uk/dserve/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Show.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqPos=1405&dsqSearch=%28%28text%29=%27st%20mewan%27%29
This has a date of 1839, but you would need to view the full manuscript at the records office to find out more.
Also mentioned in graces guide in 1856:

When you say your colleague at work (par)
Do you mean that your colleague lives in par or you yourself work in par?
I live in the Par area and am busy visiting as much as of the area as I can, this is also on my radar

The Cornish boiler which is now at Levant came from Trethowel.
It was delivered by the Daniel Bros traction engines to Geevor and from there to Levant by L. Hosking's traction engine.

Hi, Just an update. There is an adit in the wood. The leaf mould has built up over the years so we used a rope to lower ourselves in. There are two small tunnels with the remains of planks on the bottom and a couple of old oil drums rusting away.

I'm pretty sure this was taken further up the valley from us.

Looking at the marks on the map, the workings seem to be on an eastish-westish structure, rather than a northish-southish. I wonder if there were 3 lodes and the pits were on the backs of them, whether the marks on the map are other remains, tips or what have you....
I'd be interested in having a look. I'm fine tuning my low temp metals geology.
