I would be interested if any areas are suffering from Artists imposing their work on the natural/industrial landscape?
This is happening at the Botallack new tin floors area where at least 4 panels approx 6'by 2' depicting a seascape are painted on rendered walls. Have informed NT and WHS. They need to be removed swiftly before it becomes accepted as jolly nice idea by other darlings. Art yes, but where it belongs! 😠

There's some 'caves' in glacial till on the coast about 1 mile to the east of Beaumaris which someone has seen fit to adorn with hundreds of painted pebbles.

Interesting question, how does one distinguish between art and pure vandalism?

Example, Monkton Farleigh railway portal. The daubings there would be considered art by some. Its as though these people see what they are dong as some kind of mission.
Of course my question is academic, we dont want it and its the wrong place for it.

Quite agree Colin, this isn't art. I can just about tolerate the odd small discreet "Tracey woz ere" sort of thing, but four panels at 6' x 2' is vandalism.

I do hope this hasn't actually been sponsored by the NT.

There is also some tagging in Box Mine that needs sorting:

Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.

Apart from any other considerations, why paint 4 seascapes in a location where there is a real awe-inspiring ever-changing seascape to sit and enjoy anyway?

More interesting questions now raised.

If I went around putting up "RF" everywhere I would be rightly criticised, however if you look carefully in Bryneglwys, somewhere there is an "RF 1964"

Should I now go and scrub it off?

The point about so called 'public art' is that you don't get any choice about whether you look at or not. I'm very interested in art but I don't wan't it pushed in my face.
So, anything claiming to be art that appears in a public place should be be in some way - not sure how - vetted by people who have a real interest in the area it appears rather than approved by passing dilletantes. As a general rule it should be discouraged.

Very good points, but its even worse when its our money that pays for it.

Well said Bill L.

Regardless of personal tastes, I think there are some good ideas involving skill and craftsmanship that deserve to be seen. This doesn't have to be permanent display, and shouldn't involve damaging an existing environment.

There is display space in Botallack Count House which budding artists could use. Also a number of galleries in St Just for if they produce anything that people might actually want to buy. Or do I miss the point there?

A dodgy argument there, "our money" also contributes to the preservation of all sorts of culture and landscapes, including of course mining heritage.

Within the past couple of months some quite well painted large pictures of insects have appeared on some of the structures remaining from the Eston ironstone mines in Cleveland here. The artist has even included his web address where he describes himself as being available for graffiti projects. Unfortunately he appears to have left some of his paint tins behind among the other rubbish deposited by the messy and untidy population of this country of ours.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?
