I recently found what I think are some mineral workings near North Molton in North Devon. There is a water wheel pit and some disturbance of the ground and I found a chunk of quartz with a vein of galena through it. I would like to do some further investigation but I am uncertain as to how to proceed with locating the land owner and getting permission .Anyone got any tips to pass on..Also a separate site near 578 332 on SS is shown as having been a silver mine up to 1875. but I can`t find the precise location .Does anyone know just where it is please?Roger Doran [email protected]

You need a book.....

Try Claughton Mines of West Somerset and North Devon

Alternatively, try contacting Peter Claughton through NAMHO or Exeter University. A word of advice, never post your email on an open forum - they get picked up by spambots....

Do you have an NGR for the site mentioned first? - A quick look at the NGR you gave put the second mentioned site very close to Barnstaple... is that correct?
I know the North Molton area well, and a number of landowners.

Maybe Banfylde, a friend of mine lives in North Molton and has, with Exmoor mine research group been stabilising the engine house for years. Think that the Stuckley family own the land.

Bampfylde is the correct spelling Gary, and Yes it's the Stuckley (not sure of spelling) family that own the site.
Hope you're well and exploring your silver-lead mine.
