A rather nice PDF has been uploaded by exHayle, it's a scan of a letter from a Mary Trowson, dating from 1871, the widow of a mine engine worker sent to her brother in New Zealand thanking him for a gift of £5 when she and young children existed on £1/month.

The chap who uploaded it actually remembers one of the people named in the letter, making it all the more personal.
