looking to locate and record current state of the iron mines on the brendon hill. is anyone else doing the same thing and do you have any details of current locations. i am also looking for a copy of the mineral railway book. All i have found so far are very expensive?
The incline and winding house are still evident and i explored a level to the right just down from the house. will use gps to locate and photographs to record whats current

Have a look in the DB by Map Sheet and I have a feeling some of the better known sites might be in. 🙂

There's also a fair bit of information in Exmoor's Industrial Archaeology, Edited by Michael Atkinson (Exmoor Books 1997). The section on Iron Mining (pp14-40) has ten pages specifically on the Brendon Hills) as well as photos in other parts of the book.

I lived in Watchet for some years and would regularly walk the line to the top of the incline.

Appears to lack the mine descriptions.

Tony - how much is it worth, for insurance purposes, you understand! 😉

I take it that for a professional valuation you are willing to pay the usual 1% fee? Are we talking about the West Somerset Mineral Railway? About £15.00, or slightly more if you want me to sell you a replacement copy 😉

That's really cheap for a book that's supposed to be as rare as hen's teeth! Ah, I get it, you are like that 'antiques expert' who came round yesterday, valued that old Michelangelo statue I have in the garden whose arms have broken off at £20, and expected me to sell it to him. "Hardly worth my while driving over to pick it up, guv, especially as it's damaged stock". Only joking....

Try this link. (Thanks, Tony)

Some of the cheaper copies available here don't sound too expensive.

Which one? The photo compilation, or the hardback full history?

Have you got a copy of 'Notes on some of the Brendon Hills Iron Mines and the West Somerset Railway' by MH Jones 1999 ? Loads of maps, surveys of engine houses, the big incline winder etc - very good book.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
