As promised, here are some pictures of the rather expensive piece of street 'art'? supposed to depict a Cornish Miner.
The locals have dubbed it 'The Scarecrow' I think it looks like a scene from Titanic.
Apperently it was designed by a scottish sculptor with the help from Scottish students, which seems somewhat crazy given the fact we have artists by the town load down here (it's almost a pre-requisite if you live in St.Ives) and I'm sure any one of those people would have been honoured to have taken on the project.
Can't say I would relish the thought of doing a shift underground with his pick! and How can he lean that far forward without falling flat on his pasty?

Obviously deigned by a "committee", possibly the same group responsable for the "charming" restorations of our mining landscapes with a bulldozer and grass seed.

Allthough I have not seen it, people did asked me where was its mack or trenchcoat ;)

Perhaps your comment Roy about the Titanic is apt, ah I know Redruth struck a large CPR iceberg perhaps. 😮
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

I believe it came out of the regeneration fund. They are quite good at wasting money down here. They have built some impressive granite pavements in Camborne which in parts are now wider than the road!!

We had one of those sculptures, it depicted an iron miner. It got vandalised by local yobs.

From that pose they must have got Fore Street and Forecatle mixed up.

I assume its yet another design from that infamous quango CPR.
(I think it stands for Consult Precluding Residents, so you wouldnt expect anyone local to be involved)

On a more serious note this is supposed to be a memorial to the Cornish miner and their families. It makes a mockery of it. Compare it to the one in Newlyn.

And the irony is we have a blasted great memorial of the Bassets staring down ay us all the time.

If it looked anything like this one I can understand why.

Ithink they should have called the quango [/b]Camborne Redruth And P🅱ool or just CRAP for short to truly reflect their impact on the area.... 😉 CPR....... If the Council tax rises any further we will all be needing CPR!!!!! 😮

It also stands on a plynth of granite which looks very non-cornish in origin. I'd say the lack of iron content and decent size feldspars indicated that it might be from bloody Norway!

He looks like he's just fallen off a man engine!

The least they could do would be using a bit of Carn Brea granite, or am I totally wrong here?

Probably not. I don't know about the plynth but as far as I'm aware much of the granite used in the renovations in Camborne came from China.

That will confuse the geologists. My folks history is partially in granite quarries and it seems daft that it is cheaper to shift it from China and Norway, given the quality of stone over here.

Since property has a daft mark up around here, it strikes me that in the interests of the visual impact of the area, people use local stone, rather than breeze blocks and pebbledash. Perhaps, it would only leave the developers with £100K profit per unit.

Probably good job for them I'm not the planning chief.

I personally like the idea of things in that area (jeez I'm going to sound new-labour) celebrating the past, history and belongingness of the inmates of the area. It's their identity and given the amount of wishy-washy **** peddled by wishy-washy teachers, it's something to help give the youth of the area something to be proud of and consider.

Generally, a contribution to the chavness in local chavs is lack of identity. Once you have that, it brings a certain degree of pride.

They should have used proper granite, rather than the stuff with slitty feldspars 🙂

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the granite for the Redruth project was shipped in from portugal.
I wonder what port it was landed at? or was it so cheap they sent it by airmail 😮

Would your average miner from this area ever have got his hands on an ingot of tin?
I was under the impression that although some copper was smelted locally the tin was sent to South Wales.

Other way around, hence copperopolis (swansea). I thought both were smelted prior to the mining years and all went away hence.
