The proportions of the drawing of the Clift loco are wrong, it was a very squat machine. The vertical cylinders were not mounted on the side of the boiler as depicted but separated from it by a structure which could be a water tank. The boiler was unlagged and the mudhole position was very high up on the boiler. That much is supported by a photograph, unfortunately the lower works are obscured by people standing in front of it.
However there are two graffitos underground in the quarry depicting the loco, which suggest four coupled wheels of equal size with inside bearings, which makes sound engineering sense. A number of visitors to the quarry noted it, some of their descriptions add information, also in late 1980 the late Mrs Wilkins of Box Hill, then a little short of her 100th birthday was able to tell me some things about it. I have just written a draft of a paper about it which will be published in the Industrial Railway Society Record.
