Hello all,

I am new to exploring mines and have decided to dedicate the weekend to learning more. I have used the search function to find over 1000 mines in the Peak District national park - unfortunately you cannot sort the list by most visited or easiest to explore. Could someone point me in the direction of some mines that are easy to just "rock up to" and explore? :sneaky:

If anyone also has advice for mines in the forest of dean that would be great too. I visited the Bailey Level Gold Mine only to find it locked (Of course, I posted my photos.)

I'm looking to get more involved and any advice is appreciated. My plan is to visit the Forest of Dean area again tomorrow and then travel to the Peak District over the weekend.

Also look up the Derbyshire Caving Association (DCA) and Peak District Mines Historical Society (PDMHS). Both have extensive websites and the later has a searchable archive of articles about mines

Please be advised that a lot of the popular easy walk ins are closed currently at landowner request. Details should be on the DCC website.

I think you mean the DCA website, Roy, as opposed to the County Council or the club who look after Alderley Edge!

There aren't many mines in the Peak I'm happy to suggest to someone when I don't have much idea of their experience and competence underground, but Mouldridge Mine is one where the hazards are obvious and it's generally where I take people who are completely new to mine exploration.

I usually take newbies to Wapping. Some interesting things too see in Cumberland cavern and theres no deep shafts or false floors.

You can check the access status of most sites via the DCA website. Visit, www.thedca.org.uk and click on the "Peak District Caving Info" banner.
Most are open now, but not everything.

Not seen the sun for months. Now evolving to see in the dark.
