PDMHS are suspending the access agreement on Owlet Hole Mine until further notice. This is due to the padlock on the shaft entrance having been broken off, it has been secured in a temporary manner but there will be no access until a long-term solution to its security is put in place.

I have been mooching around the Matlock area recently and found the lock missing, the appearance of the lid was that it had been that way for some time.

It was reported to the Museum by a local last week and I went out to check on Saturday while the PDMHS conservation team were working at Temple Mine. I put one of my own padlocks on as an interim measure and went back last night with means to secure the shaft from the inside if the orignal lock was missing or broken; we found the lock at the foot of the shaft with the hasp broken off. I'm looking into fixing high security padlock to the underside of the frame so it can't be dropped down the shaft but this is not my top priority at the moment.

I explored the mine as it was open and I had never ever been in, but did not notice the broken lock, should have gone to Specsavers

Unfortunately, since I was last in (maybe 18 months back?) the ore chute has collapsed though it was in a parlous state then. There was a fine collection of drowned rat carcasses in the collecting tank feeding water through to the wishing well in Gullivers.....

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
