It has been reported elsewhere on t'Internet that Leicestershire County Council are discussing the closure of the Discovery Park at Snibston Colliery in Coalville.

As those who have visited the Park will know - it is the site of various extant colliery structures as well as displays on coal mining. It also houses many exhibits of an Industrial Archaeological nature as well as being a useful meeting site.

There is an on-line petition that has been started regarding this act of barbarism. If you wish to sign this petition you will need to access the site below and will need to register, but the process is straight forward. It has been reported that the petition site is not working that well, and you may have to use some patience to get your signature on the petition, but please make the effort.

Given the ludicrous amount they have been quoted to just maintain the non working tandem head gear etc I am not surprised.... Staff there are awesome and genuinely into what they do.... A real shame if it goes

The axe has fallen on Snibston Discovery Museum with Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet approving its closure.

The authority’s Tory administration yesterday approved plans to shut the Coalville attraction.

To quote the Leicester Mercury article:

"no date had been set for its closure but said some of the land there would be sold for housing."

Why have a museum when you can punt the land out to housing developers. The barbarians are truly at the gates.

Well, that's the conservatives for you. Doubtless their wives own shares in local building companies.

When the crunch comes and the morons close the place I do hope someone locally will have got the headgears and other important structures Listed or even Scheduled.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Don't be daft - there's a few quid in scrap in the headgear.

Also from the Leicester Mercury article:

"Cabinet member for museums councillor Richard Blunt said..... depending on future levels of Government funding, a smaller mining heritage museum would replace .....Snibston."

Anyone like to take a sporting bet that this actually means a sheave wheel in the middle of a roundabout.

I believe the old mine buildings (including the head gear) are either listed buildings or SAMs.

Sorry, I can't find the bit where it mentions a restrictive covenant.

Apologies _ I pasted an incorrect link; I've now corrected it by editing my post.

Rhetorical question:
Since the council are having to make huge savings, what would you have cut instead?

Chris.

It is a pity the maps that went with that second document don't seem to be available online. Would have been interesting to see the covenant area in relation to where they want to build houses to say nothing of mine shafts!

There is always public money to be had at the drop of a hat when we want a war with somebody.

There is money in the public purse; this is merely a symptom of the tory's ideological stance regarding reducing the scale of public sector.

To say nothing of making a quick buck too. The usual policy of selling the family silver.

How many Coal Mining Museums do we need? We have Big Pit, the National Coal Mining Museum, any others?

The Tories do have an ideological problem with the Public Sector. Mostly because it's paid for by the Private Sector, and if the Private Sector isn't big enough, who pays for the Public one? 'Prudence' will borrow to cover the shortfall. I'd rather not spend it if I don't have it.

Anyway, fat disabled people have Human Rights you know.

I can see this thread getting overly political (my fault entirely - time I folded up my red flag and put it away). Perhaps we should agree to differ and leave at that.

:flowers::flowers::flowers:

On a more serious note: As a man who is not averse to the odd pie or three where can I claim my mobility scooter? I reckon with a bit of ingenuity and several hammers I could bodge one into a pretty good digging winch.
