Yes, when I was 16 I used to shoot there, although I should not have. I was caught by the son of a Mrs Wallace who owned the land.

The old railway track ran from Grove Colliery the other side of Lime Lane and once I saw the engine. I can also remember an underground fire with fumes coming up out of the ground, this was on a spoil heap on the colliery side.

This would be about 1961

By the way, I live at Great Wyrley now

Roy,

Thank you for the comment. I found it fascinating reading about your experiences. It's always nice to read about real history where people have been and I can relate your stories with my photos and exploration. Do you have any old photo's at all of the local area etc?

Many thanks,

Barry.

I am very sorry but no pictures.

About half way up Engine Lane was a timber and corregated iron shed, unlocked, we would use it as a sort of shooting hut, lunch etc if it was raining. There was another higher up which was padlocked.

If you walked along the canal tow path towards BHills from the bridge there was a pool next to the tow path with some fine perch. Now filled in.

Roys teenage years, all shooting, fishing, and of course chasing girls.

No I was about 19 before I ventured underground, its all on my website.
Lighting was carbide lamps provided by a John Barratt, one of my friends. This was supplemented by a bicycle front lamp which was possibly the best hand light you could get in the 60s. We had no access to Oldham caplamps.

LEDs were Dr Who territory.

OK, 1985 and started exploring the slate mines.

SH Youle headset from Caving Suplies fitted with new Oldham reflector and 'BMW 21 watt high intensity rear fog lamp bulb'
Powered by a 12V motorcyle battery in a shoulder bag.
Also a 'poachers light' round my neck on paracord.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
