I had an email from a person researching family history with a mining connection to the Midlands region... does anybody know where records of miners in the region might be kept?

Original message extract:

I'm researching my family tree and have found that my Great-Grand father was a coal miner (hewer) in the Ashby de la Zouch area. I am trying to find out which mine he worked in. Is there an archive anywhere that will help me trace him.

Leicester and Rutland record office might be a place to start.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Simon, forward these links ... http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LEI/

There are only a few mines in Leicestershire, so the relatives shouldnt have too much trouble. Unless of course he travelled the short distance to Staffordshire.
The Mines at present in the 'leicestershire region' were all working in 1910, so hopefully this would fit the age of the relative.

The webmaster of this site might be very useful ... http://www.healeyhero.co.uk/rescue/menu.htm

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
