Hello all
I've recently moved into the Derwent Valley and am becoming fascinated by the mining heritage of this region, such as Beldon, Ramshaw etc. It's a completely new subject area to me and at the moment I am just strolling around the area trying to get an idea what all the mines, shafts, smelt mills etc where
cheers Mike

I'm not an expert in the area, but if you head along to the Nenthead Mines near Alston, I'm sure you'll bump into a couple of guys that are.
Geology:
the study of rocks & similar substances (minerals n such) that make up the Earth''s surface.
Minerals:
are the building blocks of rocks. They are a naturally occuring, inorganic, solid, crystalline substance which has a fixed structure. (and some of them are really pretty)

Hi Mike,
It's a beautiful area and plenty to look at.

NMRS 65 is available as a download. Well recommended. Also take a look at old OS maps on-line.
Most of the sites in the valley are not recorded. Shildon engine house was conserved and recorded but not much done elsewhere. The flues for the smelting mill are hidden in a plantation and unrecorded.

Be quick with DCMC though, come next month it may be no more. I'm a Derwent Valley local, few years of exploring and local research under my belt. Feel free to message me any time, i'll do my best to help.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don''''''''t.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
